Challoner, Richard
   Devotional Writer and Bishop.
   Challoner was born on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland of Presbyterian parents. After the death of his father, he was converted to Roman Catholicism and was educated at the Seminary at Douai. In 1730 he returned to the British Isles to join the London Mission, but he went back to Douai in 1738. In 1741 he was consecrated a Bishop. Challoner is remembered for his translations of the Bible and for his anthologies of prayers – The Garden of the Soul and Meditations for Every Day of the Year. These volumes have proved enduringly popular among Englishspeaking Roman Catholics.
